The City Council of Recife is proud to present to the community of Pernambuco, this synthesis of our region's popular culture – the Maracatu, the Frevo, the June Cycle, Popular Theatre, the Caboclinhos, etc.                                                                                                                   The texts have been written and put together by journalists and teachers, and seek to examine the origins of these popular manifestations and their place in the society of today. Mention is also made of the numerous variants that have sprung up naturally over the years, as a result of popular demands by the community itself.

The texts should in no way be considered definitive, and much less, conclusive. Their objective is to stimulate readers to carry out further research, and also to assist them to become more aware of the wealth of popular culture available close at hand.

The curupira* is wearing imported tennis shoes
We are unable to follow the engine of history
But we are baptized with the beat
and appreciate the celestial agriculture"
